Yasuaki Shimizu + Carl Stone

161 Old St London

From Sunday, July 8 2018 at 08:30 pm until Monday, July 9 2018 at 01:00 am

Two highly innovative, maverick composers present a night of aural experimentation projected through four-channel surround sound.

Following the re-releases of his New Wave group Mariah’s Utakata No Hibi and his 1982 solo album Kakashi, Yasuaki Shimizu has become the latest artist from the Japanese underground scene of the ‘80s to pique the interest of insatiable crate-diggers. His music, equal parts joyful and mysterious, takes listeners on a musical journey from ambient Jazz to wonky Pop, using saxophone, electronics and piano. Performing as a duo with sound artist Ray Kunimoto, this rare UK show promises to be a snapshot of a career in which he has experimented with the sounds of Jazz, Classical and Electronic music.

The evening will feature an opening set from live computer music pioneer Carl Stone, presenting material from his forthcoming album Electronic Music from the Eighties and Nineties, due for release in May 2018. His music juxtaposes samples from sources as diverse as Bach and Eurotrash superstars, often set against field recordings, vocalisms and resonances, all in real time.
