8MM HACHIMIRI MADNESS

24 Shelton St London

Thursday, November 1 2018 from 07:00 pm to 08:30 pm

Each year, LEAFF collaborates with Asian film festivals to bridge the cultural gap between East and West. For this year’s Festival Focus, we are delighted to partner with Nara International Film Festival (Festival Director Naomi Kawase). While presenting 8mm restorations of Director Naomi Kawase’s early works, LEAFF also showcases London premieres of 8mm restorations of legendary Japanese directors Ishii Sogo and Sono Sion.

THE ISOLATION OF 1/880000 | 1977 | Japan | Ishii Sogo | 43 mins

For Ishii Sogo, a 20-year-old in 1977 and not interested in school or success, “the possibilities to remain on the margins of society, to live like a punk, are very high.” Isolation of 1/880000, a portrait of such existential angst, presages the blossoming of his punk movies in the ’80s.

I AM SION SONO!! | 1984 | Japan | Sono Sion | 37 mins

Made at an age when the very act of filming alone is larger than life, Sono Sion’s first film is a free-wheeling mixture of cinema and poetry, a madcap mix of everyday going-ons and spellbinding shots with nods to Jean Cocteau’s The Blood of a Poet and Terayama Shuji.
